Sarcococca ‘Winter Gem’ — often called Sweet Box or Christmas Box — is a compact, evergreen shrub prized for its glossy foliage and wonderfully fragrant winter flowers. It’s a member of the Buxaceae family (related to boxwood), and is particularly valued for bringing life, scent, and structure to the garden during the coldest months.

Form: Dense, rounded, and bushy shrub.

Size: Typically grows to about 60–80 cm tall and 60–100 cm wide, making it ideal for borders, foundation plantings, or containers.

Foliage: Dark green, leathery, and glossy leaves (about 3–5 cm long) that remain year-round, giving it a lush appearance even in winter.

Flowers: Midwinter to early spring (usually December to March, depending on climate). Small, creamy-white, tubular blossoms that are easy to miss visually but exceptionally fragrant—sweet, rich, and often described as vanilla- or honey-scented. After flowering, small glossy black berries may appear, adding subtle interest into summer and early autumn.
